Tasting Notes

The 2020 Meyney turned out beautifully. Fresh, vibrant and full of character, the 2020 impresses with its energy and delineation. Dark cherry, rose petal, blood orange, sage, mint and white pepper all race out of the glass. The 2020 is bold and yet refined. There is certainly plenty to admire.

The 2020 Meyney has a crisp, focused and detailed bouquet with precise blackberry, blueberry and cedar scents that are almost Pauillac in style. The palate is medium-bodied with impressive concentration on the entry, layers of licorice-tinged black fruit and a peppery finish that wants to make a statement. But it's just a bit squidgy. It will require five or six years in bottle just to shave its edges. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

Tasted blind. Deepest crimson, like damson skins. Sweet and dark-fruited at the same time. Savoury too. Not yet open but complex. Rich fruit filling out elegant dry tannins, dark-fruited and long. Powerful yet refined. (JH)

The 2020 Chateau Meyney is a solid step up, with more elegance and finesse, as well as structure. Giving up medium-bodied aromas and flavors of darker currants, black cherries, classy oak, tobacco leaf, and damp earth, it has terrific overall balance, building, fine-grained tannins, and a great finish. It has some accessibility today yet will benefit from 3-5 years of bottle age and keep for two decades.
Anticipated maturity: 2027-2047
