Tasting Notes

The 2009 Le Tertre-Roteboeuf has a classically styled nose in the context of the vintage, almost Left Bank in style with touches of pencil box infusing the brambly red berry fruit. There is just a distant tang of autumn bonfire. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity, quite tight and structured with a light peppery, cedar-tinged finish that lingers impressively in the mouth. Tasted several times before, this remains an outstanding Saint-Emilion from Francois Mitjavile. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 2009 Bordeaux tasting.

Dark ruby-red. Ripe red cherry, raspberry liqueur, coffee and underbrush on the concentrated nose. Then rich, dense and suave on the palate, with a chocolatey ripeness to the red and dark fruit flavors. Finishes very long, with enticing juiciness and smooth tannins. This very rich, sweet Tertre-Roteboeuf is in the process of shutting down and actually offers less of the exuberantly rich sweet fruit it showed during the Primeurs, but it has the stuffing and backbone for a glorious mid-term life in bottle.

Served blind at the Southwold 2009 tasting. The Tertre-Roteboeuf ’09 has a very sophisticated bouquet with beautifully integrated oak. It is seamless and very refined. The palate is svelte and harmonious " not a hair out of place. Refined and focused with layers of pure, succulent red cherry and cranberry fruit on the plush finish. So much panache is suffused into this wine. This is a beautiful Saint Emilion from the inimitable Francois Mitjavile. Tasted January 2013.

Tasted blind. A very slight suggestion of oxidation. Thick and bloody " is this the Tertre R? Big and bold and devil-may-care. Tastes distinctive and dense. A statement rather than a paradigm.
Anticipated maturity: 2018-2030
