Tasting Notes

I once described the 2009 Le Gay as monumental and I have no reason to alter that view under these blind conditions. It has a tightly wound bouquet with blackberry, truffle, forest floor and light tobacco scents that gather momentum in the glass. Captivating. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, very well poised with an elegant but very persistent finish. This is extremely promising – a sophisticated and refined Pomerol that has exchanged its initial weight and girth for something more profound and long-lasting. Chapeau. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 2009 Bordeaux tasting.

Inky purple. Pretty aromas of ripe black cherry, cassis and truffle. Then dense and almost massive on the palate, with rich flavors of black plum, cassis and cocoa coating the palate. My enthusiasm was muted by a mouth-puckering tannic astringency. This big, full-bodied Pomerol might yet come around, but I doubt it will ever be remembered as a particularly graceful or charming Le Gay. This struck me as rather heavily extracted.

The deep garnet colored 2009 Le Gay simply sings of minted cassis, baked plums and blueberry pie with touches of cardamom, cloves, tree bark and pencil shavings plus a waft of lavender. The palate is medium to full-bodied and exquisitely textured with satiny tannins and bold freshness framing the vibrant, multilayered fruit, finishing long and perfumed.
Anticipated maturity: 2020-2050

Tasted blind. Dark crimson. Slight hint of brett on the nose. Dry and chewy. Quite a bit of tannin here. Not the purest Pomerol but it would be fine for reasonably early drinking with food. Drying finish.
Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027
