I recently got to try a new producer for the very first time – Sam Lambson’s Minimalist Wines. I’d vaguely heard of ‘Stars in the Dark’ before, but hadn’t ever tasted it before. Thanks to the kindness of two customers, a bottle of the 2020 arrived on my doorstep a few weeks ago. Kirsty & I duly cracked it open – and both of us were incredibly impressed. This is very much top drawer stuff – incredible purity, balance, and a real energy to the wines which we both adored. Thanks again RW & RP!
Some of the most exciting wines I have tried all year from a incredible young talent
I immediately started investigating, and discovered his range – small production wines from the cooler climates of South Africa, focusing primarily on Syrah. There’s a real Jamet influence here (not unsurpsinginly given that Sam has been to visit & learn from Jamet) – there is some whole bunch fermentation but also the real purity and finesse that I get from Jamet’s wines.Sam & his team produce a variety of wines, but this is the last vintage of the ‘Experimental’ range – he is leaving these behind to focus on the Syrahs. These represent superb value in today’s wine market, and considering that Sam is only 25, I have no doubt that this is a great starting point on a long and very successful career. Get in now.
