We are absolutely delighted to offer the latest vintage of a house favourite here at MFW – the Chiara Condello Sangiovese Predappio 2019. Chiara and her winemaker Stefano Zoli have continued the metoric rise of this estate whose first vintage was only 2015! Chiara found parcels of older, unloved vines in the hillside vineyards of Predappio, which itself lies in the foothills of the Apennines mountains.
Kirsty & I drink a lot of this at home – it’s our ‘house’ Italian red and so we were very excited to get our first case of the 2019. In short, this is the best Predappio since the 2016 vintage. It’s considerably more approachable than the 2018, and drinking well already, although it has the stuffing to evolve nicely over the next 5 years. At a very modest £65 per 6x75cl in bond, this works out at £15.68 per bottle inc VAT, and is worth every penny. Highly recommended by us (and Vinous, as you can see below!).
‘With each passing vintage, the wines at this estate continue to get better and better. Even her “entry-level” Romagna Sangiovese Predappio, a blend of three vineyards, can put many of the top wines of the region to shame. While you could say that it’s meant for earlier consumption and easier drinking, there is so much character packed into this classic varietal expression, and there is no harm in cellaring it for three to five years or more… The only sad thing is that word about Chiara Condello and her accomplishments has gotten out, and the wines have begun to disappear quickly.’ - Eric Guido, Vinous (Nov 2021)
